Rio Grande Nature Center State Park
Rio Grande Nature Center State Park is located on the east side of Albuquerque on the west bank of Rio Grande.
The visitor center has conference rooms for lectures, and a big observation room with large picture windows opens
to a pond with many kinds of ducks. Two trails near the river offer great varieties of birds. The wheat field offers
winter food for Sandhill Cranes, which can crowd the field by the thousands.

A flying Wood duck , or any duck is
hard to catch with cemara.
This Red-tailed Hawk
was imprinted on
human. He has no
chance to be released
successfully in the wild.
But it is a beautiful
specimen to behold.
When he opens the
wings and tail against
the light, the tail is
pinkish, very distinctive
character.
Once I heard of noice
repeating with much
anxiety at the edge of
my back woods,
Against the west sun, I
saw this pink-feathered
hawk chasing a
squirrel up a tree, The
noise was crying for life
from the squirrel.
Perhaps the squirrel
was more agile around
the tree then the hawk,
and he got away. The
cry probably surprised
the hawk too.
Two connecting loop trails lead to the Rio
Grande. Curious Black-eyed Juncos came to
check us out.
Brewer's Black Birds has prominent yellows
as compared to crows. They like to play along
side of the river.
Along the river, starting a less visited area, I
was startled by a big shadow flew over my
head, It was a Juvenile Bald Eagle, It left us
with the beautiful Rio Grande view.
On the North West of the Nature
Center a crop of wheat is planted
every year, that attracts thousands of
Sandhill Crane here. There are scores
of them here, It is great to see and
observe them.
This is the first time that I see Road Runners.
They are quite calm when I follow them
around, My, they have big eyes.
Once it puffed up, I
may have gotten too
close. When he was
crossing the parking
lot, it really made big
strides.
This the view of Sandia
mountain, in setting sun
it looks reddish with the
black dots of vegetation,
Hence the name Sandia,
"watermelon" in Spanish.
I took the longest tram in
the world, 2.7 miles, The
view was fantastic. The
craggy peaks repeated
layer after layer, yellow
with orange even a bit of
red. Reminds me of
Huang Shan, It is a
place worth revisiting
with plans to hike.
