|Ph.D. Hooding & Commencement
of Brian Chen
Brian completed his doctorate requirement from the Computer Science Department of Rice University in last fall.
Immediately he started his postdoc work at the Biochemistry Department of Columbia University. But the
commencement is held annually. He flew back and invited me and Mike to come along. The hooding and
commencement ceremonies were great, The commencement is a collective ceremony for the bachelors, masters, and
the doctorate, while the hooding ceremony is for the Ph.D.s along. Each new Ph.D was offered the hood by his/her
major professor or substitute in center stage, They walk onto and off stage together, even line up together. I did not
attend my own graduation. This is new to me.
I feel the Ph.D. program of Computer Science at Rice is a well rounded; not only the candidates have to do research,
they have to teach, guide helper to research, practice getting grant, present research results and publish. Brian's
major professor was at conference overseas so the chairman of the department, Dr. Cooper, substituted for the
hooding ceremony. The graduates were very relaxed in front of the chairman, I was impressed. Brian explained that
he used to go back home after saying good morning to Dr. Cooper after pulling his all nighters.
